Jones re-elected to N.C. Senate

Nov 07, 2012 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sen. Ed Jones, a Democrat, will serve a fourth term in the state Senate.

Jones won Tuesday against Republican Warren Nail in the race for N.C. Senate District 4 with more than 72 percent of the vote. Nail received roughly 27 percent of the overall vote.

The district includes Wilson, Halifax, Nash, Vance and Warren counties. In Wilson County, Jones received 9,797 out of the total 11,076 total votes.

Jones is a three-term senator and a retired state highway patrolman. He also served one term in the House.

"We did the best we could with what we had," Nail said Tuesday night. "I only spent $500. It takes money to run these campaigns." Nail said he would probably run again.

"In the meantime, I will be doing everything I can to hold his (Jones) feet to the fire and make sure he looks out for the people of our district," he said. "I would also like to thank him for running a clean campaign." Jones has said he believes in putting more money in schools for children in the classrooms. He has said children don't vote and they deserve to have someone who represents their voice. Jones, who has been battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy, has said he will continue to help those who don't have a voice.

Jones has also been involved here in Wilson County. He was one of several legislators who attended weekly and monthly meetings to ensure the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf remained open. Jones worked in collaboration with others in the General Assembly to put together a plan of action. Jones, who serves on the Justice and Public Safety committee, has said that once prisoners have completed their sentence it's important for them to be productive.

Jones is one of the primary sponsors of a Senate bill to require a study of the effects of tolls on Interstate 95 and to require approval from the General Assembly before tolls are permitted. Nail is a former truck drive of nearly two decades who is now on disability due to back-related issues. -- 265-7879 ___ (c)2012 The Wilson Daily Times (Wilson, N.C.)
