EMCORE Gets Another Satellite Contract

(FinancialWire via COMTEX) -- November 14, 2012 (FinancialWire) -- Compound semiconductor-based products company EMCORE Corp. (NASDAQ: EMKR) recently announced that it was awarded a solar panel manufacturing contract by ATK for the AMOS-6 commercial telecommunications satellite planned for launch in early 2015. Solar panels populated with EMCORE's most advanced ZTJ triple-junction solar cells will power the AMOS-6 spacecraft manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries, noted EMCORE company officials.

AMOS-6, operated by Spacecom, will reportedly be co-located at the 4EsW orbital position with AMOS-2 and AMOS-3. It will provide steerable Ku-band with Pan-European and Middle East coverage, and a Ka-band beam for broadband services in Africa and Europe, EMCORE officials said. The AMOS satellite fleet, beginning with the AMOS-1 in 1996, provides broadcasting and communications services to DTH (Direct-To-Home) television operators, TV broadcasters and programmers, government and corporate organizations, and VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) network operators, according to the company.

Previously, EMCORE announced it was awarded a solar panel manufacturing contract by Orbital Sciences Corp. for NASA's Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) mission targeted for launch in early 2016.

The panels, also populated with EMCORE's ZTJ cells will power the ICESat-2 spacecraft manufactured by Orbital. ICESat-2 builds on measurements taken by NASA's original ICESat mission, EMCORE officials noted.

EMCORE (approx market cap. US$ 111.9 mil.), together with its subsidiaries, provides compound semiconductor-based products for the broadband, fiber optics, satellite and solar power markets. The company was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico. EMCORE employs approximately 1,000 people.
