Icicle Ball tickets on sale now to benefit ACTS

Nov 14, 2012 (Aiken Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Tickets to Area Churches Together Serving's night of dancing, eating and bidding -- all for a good cause -- are on sale now.

ACTS' 5th Annual Icicle Ball on Jan. 19 at St. Thaddeus Church serves as the organization's fundraiser for its food programs.

Tickets are $70 per person or $560 for a table of eight and have to be ordered before the event. Orders can be mailed in. All tickets can be picked up at ACTS' location on 340 Park Ave SW.

The center opens up a pantry Monday through Friday to provide select people with a week's worth of food and holds a Senior Distribution day the third Saturday of every month where they provide a month's-worth of food to certain seniors, Vicki Bukovitz, executive director, said.

"We have a lot of people living on marginal income," she said.

Five years ago, 80 seniors signed up to receive food through the Senior Distribution day, and Bukovitz panicked a bit.

"(I thought) 'How could we afford all these people," she said.

The center didn't have a fundraiser for the food ministries and wanted to do something different, yet upscale. Thus, the Icicle Ball was formed.

The ball will include a social and silent auction at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

The dancing will begin at 8 p.m.

Music will be provided by local Palmetto Groove Party Band. "We are happy to do it," Rick Osbon, the band's bass player and singer, said.

"It's great cause (that provides) a huge need to the community. It's a really neat niche." While the event was moved out of Newberry Hall, the hall will still cater the event.

"We had over 200 at Newberry," Bukovitz said "That's why we are moving. We can put in about 10 more tables at St. Thaddeus." St. Thaddeus Church is located at 125 Pendleton St S.W.
