Exercise-centric amenities are what residents and potential residents are looking for as the holidays near.

Fitness centers and swimming pools were the third- and fourth-most searched community features on during October, behind pet-friendly communities and apartments with garages.

Apartment fitness centers are often accessible to residents only by a key card or passcode, and typically include several cardio machines, weight machines and an area for floor exercises. To see a list of suggested exercises to do at home or in apartment fitness centers, visit

According to a study conducted at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, researchers found that dining in a group causes the average person to consume 44 percent more calories than they would alone. Since the average person gains one to two pounds from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day, apartment residents - and home dwellers alike - may be looking for ways to burnextra calories when they have a spare moment.

"Apartment community fitness centers are one of the best tools for resident weight management and overall health maintenance, and they're a popular search feature on our site," said Scott Asher, Vice President, Marketing and Operations. "Many fitness centers are open at all hours of the day, and they allow you to fit exercise in before, during and after the holidays, relieving stress and helping you stay in shape."
