BRIEF: APD Officer Strikes Fleeing Suspect With Police Vehicle

Nov 23, 2012 (Albuquerque Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man who led police on a short vehicle and foot pursuit from a grocery store parking lot has been hospitalized with minor injuries after an officer struck him with his police vehicle, according to an email from APD.

Officers went to the Smith's grocery store at Central and Tramway around 9:30 a.m. after receiving calls about a suspicious vehicle, the email from officer Rob Gibbs said. One of the officers tried to contact the driver of the vehicle, but the man sped away.

According to Gibbs' email, the man rammed into an unoccupied police vehicle, then into another person's vehicle. The man then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. An officer who was searching the area in his vehicle on Rachel SE when the man ran out of a residential yard and into the officer's path.

The man was not seriously injured, Gibbs' email said, but he was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital for observation.

APD officers have determined that the vehicle the man was driving was recently reported stolen, Gibbs wrote.
