Akron area companies make Weatherhead list

Dec 28, 2012 (The Akron Beacon Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Web design/development company headquartered in downtown Akron continues to rack up recognition.

The 30-employee OuterBox Solutions Inc. this month snagged the No. 5 spot on a list of Northeast Ohio's fastest-growing companies.

The company, founded in 2004, got that spot on the Weatherhead 100 list with sales growth of more than 1,200 percent from 2007 through 2011.

The annual Weatherhead 100 list, which began in 1987, is compiled by Case Western Reserve University and the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE).

This year, companies are ranked on self-reported sales growth from 2007 through 2011.

OuterBox was among only five Northeast Ohio companies on Inc. magazine's 2012 list of the 500 fastest-growing private companies in the nation. OuterBox was the only Akron firm to make the Inc. list.

OuterBox specializes in building what are called e-commerce sites, focusing on search-engine optimization -- using techniques to get websites to rank high in search results.

Meanwhile, a Hudson installer of gutter guards, LeafFilter Inc., ranks No. 4 on the Weatherhead list.

The company, founded in 2005 and with a nationwide network of offices, reported sales growth of more than 1,400 percent in the 2007 through 2011 period.

A Medina County company, OrthoHelix Surgical Designs, ranks No. 6 on the Weatherhead list. This Granger Township business develops implants used in small bone reconstructive surgery.

It reported sales growth of about 640 percent.

Another downtown Akron company, Knotice, came in at No. 9. The company develops software that can be used to deliver marketing messages to customers via the Web, email and cellphones. It reported sales growth of about 450 percent from 2007 through 2011.

Knotice co-founder and Chief Executive Brian Deagan noted that in November the company garnered the No. 182 spot on another list called Deloitte's Fast 500.
