Job Front: Sacramento River Cats hiring for 2013 season

Jan 07, 2013 (The Sacramento Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sports fans' eyes may be on football and basketball, but minor league baseball's Sacramento River Cats are already hiring for the 2013 season.

The ball club is hiring more than 150 seasonal workers for a variety of positions around Raley Field as it gears up for the spring.

From "guest services to the ground crew to the clean team, the variety's definitely there," said River Cats spokesman Zak Basch.

Some 400 people will work for the home team at the ballpark during the 2013 Pacific Coast League campaign, plus a small army of concessionaires, Basch said.

The number of employees is "pretty typical" for a River Cats season, Basch said. "They enjoy the work and the camaraderie that comes with it." With the thousands of fans who come to the park each season, Basch said people skills are key.

Prospective employees, he said, should be "really fan friendly and knowledgable." "From the moment they park their car, we want to greet fans with a smile," Basch said.

Perks include free passes to select employee appreciation nights, discounted tickets to select games, employee discounts at the team's On Deck Shop and discounted cellular phone rates for AT&T and Verizon customers.

Applicants can find information and apply for available jobs with the Sacramento River Cats online at rcjob.

The River Cats' season begins April 4 against the Las Vegas 51s at Raley Field.

SEMA offers scholarships The Specialty Equipment Market Association, or SEMA, an automotive trade group, is offering scholarships to students preparing for careers in the auto and auto parts industries.

Applicants who attend two-year schools are eligible to earn up to $2,000; those who attend four-year programs can receive as much as $5,000.

"Our hope is that we'll continue to attract highly qualified students who will contribute and make strong, positive impacts in our industry," said Jamie Eriksen, SEMA's education director in a statement announcing the scholarships.

The Diamond Bar organization awards scholarships based on a number of criteria including academic achievement, work experience, community involvement and recommendations. Students also must submit essays for consideration.

The application deadline is March 29. For more information, check online at or contact education administrator Juliet Marshall at or (909) 978-6655.
