Privacy Ref Becomes Data Privacy Day Champion - Activities Include a Webinar on "Kick-Starting a Data Privacy Program" for Small and Mid-sized Businesses

Westborough, MA and Boynton Beach, FL, Jan 14, 2013 ( via COMTEX) -- Privacy Ref ( today announced that it has signed on to become a Data Privacy Day (DPD) Champion to promote messages about the importance of data protection and controlling ones digital footprint. Coordinated and led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), Data Privacy Day is held each year on January 28th and is an international awareness effort to empower people to better protect their privacy. As a Data Privacy Day Champion, Privacy Ref will provide educational information to support the 2013 Data Privacy Day theme, "Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust," promoting data privacy for small and mid-sized businesses through a number of different outlets, including a free webinar, social media, blogs, a radio show appearance, free consultations and more.

Data Privacy Day began in the United States and Canada in January 2008, as an extension of the Data Protection Day celebration in Europe. The Day commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection. Bob has extensive professional experience in the development of privacy policies and procedures, the definition of performance metrics to evaluate privacy maturity, and the evaluation of compliance to industry requirements and best practices. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US, CIPP/IT), has deep subject matter knowledge surrounding key laws and regulations regarding consumer privacy and information security, and is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Certification Advisory Board for its Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) program as well a member of their faculty. Most recently, Bob served as senior manager of Worldwide Privacy and Compliance for Staples, Inc., a Fortune 150 retailer, where his responsibilities included development, awareness, and compliance of global privacy-related policies and procedures for more than 60 business units in 26 countries.
