EDITORIAL: Editorial: Cheers and more cheers 02/22/13

Feb 22, 2013 (The Pantagraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Cheers ... to State Farm Insurance Cos. Foundation, for its generous $1.5 million gift to Heartland Community College.

The money will help deserving students who want to work in high-demand areas such as information technology.

State Farm has for years supported its hometown in ways both large and small. This is yet another example of the company putting its Good Neighbor philosophy into action.

Cheers ... to Doubletree at Hilton, Midwest Limousine, Fox and Hounds, JC Sales, Biaggi's, Leanne Bordner, ISU cheerleaders, the Snyder Cos., U.S. Cellular Coliseum and singer Luke Bryan for making a dream come true.

The groups helped Chelsea Loyd of Georgia, who has mitochondrial disease, get her "wish" to meet the country star via Kids Wish Network.

Doubletree's general manager, Rodney Brittain, is all too familiar with the program: his late daughter, Kirbie, also enjoyed a wish trip.

Kirbie Brittain of Towanda was 15 when she died on Sept. 1, 2008, of a virus that attacked her heart a year after a heart transplant.

Cheers ... to the students of Normal Community West High School, for their annual King of Hearts fundraiser.

Over the years, the male "beauty" pageant has raised thousands of dollars for agencies and individuals in need.

It's always great when an event makes a lot of people laugh, a few cry, for a good cause.

Cheers ... to the candidates involved in Tuesday's primary election, for providing a strong and lively run-up to the general election on April 9.

Running for public office is a tough thing to do, but being involved in our governments and boards is important on many levels and we urge more people to step up to have their names placed in nomination.

Cheers ... to everyone involved in this weekend's IHSA basketball finals at Illinois State University and U.S. Cellular Coliseum. The Class 1A and 2A girls' basketball teams will compete Friday and Saturday at Redbird Arena, with larger classes competing the following weekend, also at Redbird.

Meanwhile, the dual team wrestling state finals will be Saturday at the Coliseum.

Whether you're a fan, a friend or family, you know the sacrifices they've made. Good luck to all.
