OC brings in oil and gas classes

Feb 27, 2013 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Employees in the oilfield industry can find extra training in safety and health when it comes to their day-to-day jobs because of an agreement that was signed Tuesday by Odessa College and the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service.

OC is now a host site for a TEEX Cooperative Learning Center and OC can now teach TEEX curriculum through its own instructors and facilitators who have been approved. The agreement also gives the college exclusive rights to teach TEEX classes.

"Bringing in these classes to the Permian Basin provides increased opportunities for oil and gas industry in the region to train their employees more conveniently and affordably," OC President Greg Williams said.

TEEX owns and operates the OSHA Training Institute Southwest Education Center (OTISEC) located in Mesquite and provides OSHA certified safety and health training in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

"With the level of shale gas play in the Permian Basin fields, our training program requests in this region of the state are at an all-time high. Partnering with Odessa College provides TEEX with the opportunity to meet this demand and provide much-needed safety and health training to the oil and gas industry workers in the Permian Basin," Ron Peddy, the director of OTISEC, said.

Classes scheduled for the spring include Introduction to Oil and Gas, Medic First Aid and CPR Trainer, Recordkeeping Rule Seminar and Introduction to Accident Investigation. The next classes are for Introduction to Accident Investigation on March 26 and March 27 at OC. Several other classes are slated for April and May.

The classes are taught through the classes Continuing Education and Workforce Training Office.

TEEX was established as a state agency in 1948 as part of the Texas A&M University System.
