"Miracle on Eyes" Campaign Spreads Awareness about Keratoconus During Olympic Games

SOCHI, Russia --(Business Wire)--

Olympic gold medal-winning bobsledder Steven Holcomb has teamed up with Beverly Hills eye surgeon Dr. Brian S. Boxer Wachler to launch the "Miracle on Eyes" campaign during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The campaign's mission is to spread awareness about a new treatment for Keratoconus, a degenerative eye disease that affects millions of people worldwide and almost stole Holcomb's vision and career.

For more information on the "Miracle on Eyes" campaign, press is invited to attend the U.S. Olympic Bobsled and Skeleton Team Press Conference on Monday, February 3rd from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Main Press Center located in Tolstoy Hall at Sochi's Olympic Park. There will be an opportunity to interview Steven Holcomb and the rest of the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Teams.

Steven Holcomb was considered a strong gold contender for the 2010 Olympics, but he had a secret: he was losing his vision. Steven was diagnosed with Keratoconus, a degenerative eye disease that can lead to severe vision loss if leftuntreated. He was almost forced to retire from bobsledding until his team doctor and coaches discovered Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, who had developed a revolutionary new treatment for Keratoconus. After being treated, Steven won the first U.S. Olympic Gold medal in bobsled in 62 years.

Steven's miracle story raised worldwide awareness of this new treatment and continues to help educate people around the world about this completely non-invasive procedure. Previously, the conventional treatment of Keratoconus was an invasive and painful cornea transplant. Steven's story of triumph over adversity was recognized by the renaming of the treatment in his honor. The treatment, now called Holcomb C3 (News - Alert)-R, marked the first time that a medical procedure was named after an Olympic athlete.

The "Miracle on Eyes" campaign will involve various awareness raising activities, lasting through the duration of the Sochi Winter Olympics. Information about Keratoconus and treatment options will be shared via the "Miracle on Eyes" Facebook page, Instagram page, and Twitter (News - Alert) handle @MiracleOnEyes. In conjunction with the "Miracle on Eyes" campaign, Dr. Boxer Wachler will be traveling to Sochi to reunite with his favorite athlete and be in the stands cheering as Steven races to defend his Olympic Gold.
