Woolworths Appoints Ex-Coles Advertising Exec as CMO [Executive Appointments Monitor Worldwide]

(Executive Appointments Monitor Worldwide Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) In recent news from Woolworths supermarkets, a new Chief Marketing Officer has been appointed – ex-Coles GM, Tony Phillips.

With a history in advertising, Phillips is known as Founder and Managing Director of AdTown, Managing Director of George Patterson Melbourne and spent the past seven years in the roles of General Manager Marketing Communications, General Manager Sponsorships and Events and General Manager Category Marketing for Coles.

Alongside this new appointment, which is reported to be part of wider restructure of Woolworths supermarkets' marketing division, a new Director of Customer Experience has been filled by Jess Gill, while Woolworths also expands its agency roster to include Leo Burnett.

In her new role, Gill will be leading the ongoing development of Woolworths' brand strategy, format development, online customer experience and also "embedding deeper customer insights" throughout the Woolworths business.

Woolworths Managing Director of Australian Supermarkets and Petrol, Tjeerd Jegen expressed his excitement regarding the new appointments, as well as the additional of Leo Burnett.

"We're very excited to be adding one of Australia's premier creative agencies to our roster and I believe this addition will help us stay ahead of the pack in what is a very competitive market.

"With a new marketing team of Tony and Jess, combined with a new creative agency in the roster in Leo Burnett, I know we will further strengthen our position as Australia's leading supermarket." Alongside the tearaway success of last year's Aussie Animals Cards promotion, this marketing restructure may be further indication of Woolworths angling for a meaningful market position as supermarket category leader above long-time competitor, Coles.
