Surescripts Selects AppDynamics to Manage Performance of Nation's Largest Health Information Network

Surescripts will utilize AppDynamics to help maintain 24/7 operability, proactively manage application performance and continue to deliver a positive user experience.

In 2013, Surescripts routed more than 6 billion health information transactions, including electronic prescriptions, medication histories, immunization notifications and clinical messages between more than 70 percent of all physicians and 95 percent of all pharmacies in the United States. Despite a dependable technology infrastructure and proven track record of excellent response times, Surescripts needed a single tool to provide end-to-end visibility of system performance across its combined .NET and Java network, including historical data on performance and the ability to monitor relative performance as new code is put into production.

The dynamic approach to determining performance baselines uses intelligence gathered from continually monitoring site response times to adjust performance thresholds automatically. For example, if the response time of a business transaction within an application is a few seconds one week, and a development fix improves that response time to a more instantaneous sub-second response, the AppDynamics APM solution will automatically adjust the baseline for that transaction, just as end-user expectations will change. Static baselines require IT to manually set performance thresholds. Since different transactions require different response times -- processing a payment takes longer than returning search results because it must go through third-party verification -- thresholds must be set and adjusted for each type of transaction. With resources already constrained in today's fast-paced IT environments, static performance management is no longer practical.

The AppDynamics APM platform has already proven its benefit in the early stages of implementation at Surescripts. For instance, Surescripts provides prescribers with formulary data to determine what medication is covered by insurance benefits, serving up to 75,000 files a day. Once Surescripts deployed AppDynamics, code inefficiencies were uncovered and enhancements were implemented, which directly lead to improvements in download performance and consistency. Surescripts is looking to extract the same value in other areas of its network as the AppDynamics deployment continues to rollout in an effort to drive more proactive performance improvements.
