BRIEF: Hall board to present Saul award [Standard-Speaker, Hazleton, Pa. :: ]

(Standard-Speaker (Hazleton, PA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 10--For the sixth straight year, the Hazleton Area Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors will present the Ray Saul Memorial Youth Sports Monetary Award.

Local youth sports organizations must submit an application to be considered for the award. Organizations which have not requested an application will not be considered.

The deadline for applications is Monday, Aug. 25.

Winners will receive their award at the Hall's induction banquet on Sunday, Sept. 21.

The purpose of the award is "to expand opportunities for participation in quality youth sports programs that foster sportsmanship, confidence, discipline and teamwork.'' In addition, the board "supports programs that expand opportunities for national and international sports competition.'' The board agreed to name the award in honor of Saul, the retired sports editor and managing editor at the Standard-Speaker. Saul had served as the Hall of Fame board's chairman emeritus from its inception until his death in February 2009.
