Mobicom '14: The New Generation of Mobile Computing Researchers

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MAUI, Hawaii, Aug. 27 -- The Association for Computing Machinery issued the following news release: MobiCom (, the annual conference of ACM's Special Interest Group on Mobility of Systems, Users, Data and Computing (SIGMOBILE) (, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by highlighting the latest pioneering work in mobile computing and wireless networking. The conference features entrepreneurs who have started successful network product enterprises as well as iconic creators of Internet technology. The program celebrates the field's many accomplishments while maintaining its focus on deep research that speeds up translation of innovations to products with novel elements. The conference runs from September 7-11 at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa.

A key strength of MobiCom, demonstrating concepts with detailed prototypes, takes an upward slope with more peer-reviewed papers (36 selected out of 220 submitted) presented than ever before. These papers will demonstrate sophisticated, fully operational prototypes in a highly anticipated contest. The conference also boasts a mobile app competition, thereby becoming a budding ground for innovations in the mobile app space.

The conference is taking a leadership role in shaping what academic institutions do with their innovations by holding a Startup Pitch Contest to be judged by Silicon Valley venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. The event will evaluate multiple startup ideas, grill them the VC way, and invite the winner to their Silicon Valley offices for a pitch in front of the "shark pool." To embolden rookie entrepreneurs, Sanjit Biswas will deliver the first keynote, "From Grad School to Startup to Acquisition." His startup, Meraki Networks, was inspired by his MIT graduate research project Roofnet, presented in part at MobiCom '05. Meraki was acquired by Cisco in 2012.

The second keynoter is Jeff Gehlhaar, technology vice president for Qualcomm Research, on "The Future of Mobile Computing." He leads the engineering team developing Qualcomm's Zeroth processor for brain-inspired computing, pursuing fundamental research into machine learning, neural networks, spiking sensors and novel hardware and software architectures to support this next advance in computing.

Leonard Kleinrock, SIGMOBILE's 2014 Outstanding Contribution Award ( recipient, will present a keynote address titled "Some of My Simple Results." A professor at UCLA, Kleinrock is considered a father of the Internet for developing the mathematical theory of packet networks, the technology underpinning the Internet. He is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including the National Medal of Science, the highest honor for achievement in science bestowed by the President of the United States.

The final keynoter is Kit Colbert, Chief Technology Officer of End-User Computing at VMware, on "BYOzzzz: Focusing on the Unsolved Challenges of Mobility, an Industry Perspective." He drives technical strategy and advanced development of innovative solutions for VMware's desktop, social, and mobility products.

Conference panels include "Tackling Societal Grand Challenges with Mobile Computing" and "Applying the Lessons Learnt for Navigating the Future--A Conversation with Pioneers." About ACM SIGMOBILE ACM SIGMOBILE ( promotes research and development by bringing together researchers and practitioners and fostering interest in the mobility of systems, users, data, and computing. Its activities aim to expand the evolution of portable computers and wireless networks; support the convergence of mobility, computing, and information organization; and improve access, services, management, and applications for mobile computing and communications.
