APC Leads Global Discussions on the Internet, Human Rights, Access and Gender at 2014 Internet Governance Forum

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ISTANBUL, Sept. 1 -- The Association for Progressive Communications issued the following news release: Since 2006, APC has been a key player in creating a space for civil society in internet policy making. The ninth Internet Governance Forum kicks off on 2 September in Istanbul, Turkey. For four days, people around the globe will discuss everything related to how the internet runs- from who makes decisions, what works, what doesn't, and how things can be better.

Organising and participating in workshops, side events with partners, decision makers and stakeholders, APC will lead discussion around four key areas: * The IGF is crucial to the future of the internet ecosystem and needs to go beyond talk and determine concrete actions to address internet governance issues. This should be done with all players who have a stake in the process, including civil society, governments and the private sector.

* The recognition of internet rights as human rights should be at the core of internet governance policy; APC will ensure a rights based approach to internet governance is cross-cutting theme at the IGF, and more specifically, will address: *internet governance issues from the perspective of developing countries *the intersection of sexuality and internet rights *the right to privacy in the digital age *the rising threats to human rights defenders using the internet in their work.

* The internet is a catalyst for social, human and economic development; APC will advance policies to ensure universal, public and affordable access to the internet and ICTs, including broadband and mobile services.

* Gender representation in internet governance process influences the nature and content of policy discussions; gender perspectives need to be encouraged and strengthened at the IGF.
